Article 243K of the Indian Constitution provides for the constitution of a State Election Commission for conducting elections to Panchayati Raj institutions in the states.

According to the Constitution, the next delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly seats will be based on the data of the first census conducted after 2026, which is likely to be the 2031 Census. Currently, delimitation is based on the 2001 Census.

The State Election Commissioner is appointed by the Governor of the concerned state.
